Our antenatal maternity team includes midwives, obstetricians, anaesthetists, maternity care assistants, sonographers and several clerical staff, all of whom endeavour to work together to create a positive experience for all women who choose to birth their baby with us. We are here to provide you with evidence-based information and support you to participate equally in all decision making processes and to make informed decisions about your care.
During your initial maternity booking appointment a community midwife will complete a full assessment of your medical history, emotional wellbeing and previous pregnancies/births. They will then discuss with you recommendations for the most appropriate lead professional for your antenatal care. All women will be booked under either midwife led care or consultant led care and this will be fully discussed with you.
An allocated community midwifery team will then continue to provide routine antenatal appointments to women in your local area (see Antenatal Care Timeline). If you reside outside of the Salisbury catchment area but choose to have your baby at Salisbury, your antenatal community midwife care will be with Salisbury community midwives and you will be handed over to your local community midwives for your postnatal care.
Women who are booked under consultant led care will then be referred to our antenatal obstetric led clinic. You will then have additional appointments with obstetricians at different stages of your pregnancy. Our main antenatal clinics run in the Antenatal Clinic in the Maternity department at Salisbury District Hospital. We also run some additional satellite clinics in Shaftesbury and Tidworth.
Maternity ultrasound appointments will take place at Salisbury District Hospital for dating scans (first maternity scan) and anomaly scans (at approximately 20 weeks). Some women will be recommended additional growth scans in the third trimester, these appointments can be done at Salisbury District Hospital or at our satellite clinics in Shaftesbury and Tidworth.
Some women with certain medical conditions (such as but not limited to: complex cardiac conditions, sickle cell disease, organ transplants) may be recommended to have some or all of their antenatal care at the Princess Anne Maternity Unit in Southampton, our tertiary maternal medicine referral centre.
As we are a training hospital, this means that student midwives and medical students work along doctors and midwives in all areas of the Maternity unit. We hope that you will be happy to welcome them at your consultation, but understand if you would prefer not to, the choice is entirely yours.
