Specialised Pregnancy Care

Early Pregnancy Unit

Our Early Pregnancy Unit (EPU) is located within the Breast Department and Gynaecology Unit and provides care and support for women up to 12 weeks gestation who may be experiencing problems in their pregnancy. The most common reasons that women are referred to EPU are bleeding and/or pain with a positive pregnancy test. Some women are referred for specialist care if a problem is suspected after confirming the location and viability of a pregnancy via an early pregnancy ultrasound scan. We can also provide treatment for women diagnosed with complications such as hyperemesis gravidarum (HG), a miscarriage or ectopic pregnancy.Ìý

Referral to EPU is via your GP, Midwife, Paramedic, ED or Private Ultrasound provider. Self-referral is only accepted for women based on their previous history of problems in early pregnancy, such as ectopic pregnancies or a molar pregnancies.

If you have been seen by your local EPU and sadly a miscarriage has been confirmed, you can seek further information from the . They are able to provide weekly zoom sessions which you can join for the opportunity to speak to or just listen to others that have gone through similar experiences.

Specialist Care

If you are further along in your pregnancy and require specialised care, you will be allocated to the appropriate Consultant Obstetrician. Each consultant has a team of doctors who all work closely together. A plan of care will be specifically tailored, in partnership with you, for you and your specific pregnancy needs.Ìý

Your midwife or obstetrician may refer you to see or speak to an anaesthetist during your pregnancy. They will explain the reasons for doing this and the anaesthetists will either call you or invite you to see them to discuss your care during labour and birth.

You can familiarise yourself with our Obstetricians and Anaesthetists here at Salisbury, by visiting our Meet Our Team page.
