An orthosis is an externally applied device used to modify the structural and functional characteristics of the neuromuscular and skeletal system. These include items such as spinal braces, collars, specialist footwear and insoles. The team in Salisbury provides a service to hospital in-patients as well as running our own out-patient clinics including a satellite clinic in Shaftesbury. We use orthotic devices as part of a patient’s overall treatment programme, working in multi-disciplinary teams and joint clinics with other departments, especially with the Children’s Unit, the Lower Limb Clinic in Rheumatology, the Diabetic Foot Clinic and the regional Spinal Treatment Centre. The on-site workshop allows us to adapt devices to give a more comfortable and better fit. The Moiré Fringe clinic, used to assess for back posture, spinal curvature and leg length difference, is also run within the Orthotics team.Â
By car: Enter hospital site at Entrance B. Turn immediately right. Parking (pay and display – cash/cards) is available in visitors’ car park 15 immediately on the right or in car park 12 next to the hospice. In both car parks there are a limited number of disabled parking spaces.
By bus: Alight at The Green (first stop). Follow the outdoor pathway to the right, past the Trust Headquarter Offices on the left. Cross the road at the pedestrian crossing and enter the SDH South Corridor. Continue down the slope and take the last corridor on the left to The Glanville Centre.
General clinics are held each day with the more specialist clinics at designated times of the week. Some clinics have other healthcare professionals attending with the Orthotist and we sometimes ask if a student or trainee can also observe.
We are open for collections between 2pm – 4.30pm, Mondays to Fridays. You may be asked for a monetary contribution toward footwear or insoles if supplied by the department.
